Tips on How to Choose a Domain Name (Part 2)

How to choose a domain name is not as easy as you may think, there are a few things, you might want to consider before registering a domain name. Don't jump straight in with the first thing that comes to mind.

Does your preferred domain name of choice, tie in with the name of you business or product that you are offering, for example ToysRus, is an example of a domain name that clearly states what it is offering. However if TRU had been chosen instead, then that would have been far less obvious to the potential visitor and therefore, it would have given far less ranking ability in the search engines. As the domain name itself, is the first place, the search engines will look at, to give it, its initial ranking score. So when choosing a domain name, try and get your business name or service in as few a words as possible.

Check with your domain registrar, if the domain name of choice and more importantly if it is available, you may find that the shorter the domain name, the more expensive they become, especially in profitable niches, for example, if you are involved in the dating niche, and you want to use findlove, I would suggest that that particular name would be un-available and also the cost would be prohibitive, because, right from the offset it describes the owners business intent and also would provide good ranking, however all is not lost as hyphens can be used to separate the wording, so find-love or even find--love may be available in this particular example, as these would do the same job without to much detriment to there ranking ability, however as discussed in a previous article, if a visitor was to type the domain name manually, and omitted the hyphens, they would end up at you competitors website, which is obviously not good for business.

I would not recommend the use of underscores, this is a discussion for a future article.
I have extensively tested the above statements, without much or any detriment to my ranking.
